There is an old rhyme that you may (or, may not) have heard… “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”
At Mid-America Christian University, a new school year is around the corner and therefore, it might be a good time to consider doing some new things, or at least consider doing some “old” things differently.
Myself, I’m considering losing some weight and exercising more—anybody with me? I am also thinking about how to be better organized in the use of my time. Is there something you are considering doing differently in your life?
It is very critical in life that we learn to embrace the “new,” and receive the changes that come along with life in our present culture. Why? Because we live in a world that is obsessed with “what’s new.”
Years ago, when my father was still with us, my wife Kristel made the comment that she didn’t particularly like change. (Sounds like a lot of us, right?) My dad quickly responded, “Honey, I challenge you to embrace change like a friend, instead of an enemy, because it is always happening around us and it’s not going to stop.” Nevertheless, there is a difference between things that are just “old” and things that are “timeless.”
The timeless things we hold on to like…
- Our commitment to being like Jesus.
- Our sense of community (when I think of community, I think of the church that will exist until Jesus Christ comes to welcome us to our eternal home).
- Our dedication to the Word of God.
- Our embrace of the Spirit-led life and serving others.
In the coming days, as we speed along toward a new academic year, may we consider what changes we would do well to make in our lives. At the same time, let us hold fast to the things that are timeless–even as we navigate the changes and move forward boldly.
